Ingredient #4. Know your cash flow.

Your accounting system should be able, at any time, to tell you what your cash flow position is.  There should be no guessing about which invoices you have to pay in the coming month.  You should know precisely what cash payments are coming up and as these are paid, they should be recorded immediately.
